Mental health and Wellbeing

Everybody has mental health, just like they have physical health. The two, whilst separate parts of us, can also affect each other. Mental health is the mental and emotional state in which we feel able to cope with the normal pressures of everyday life.
Our mental wellbeing is important, because it influences not only how we think and feel about ourselves, but also how we think and feel about other people.  It affects our outlook on a situation or the environment around us. We want to support our staff to achieve positive mental health and wellbeing, and also for you to know where you can access support for the times when you feel you need it.

We want everyone to know that it’s OK to not be OK.

1 in 4 adults will experience a common mental health problem.

It’s completely normal and you may have felt like this at some point in your life as a result of day-to-day problems, such as work stress, car troubles, caring responsibilities or arguing with friends or family. Other times, these feelings can be triggered because of a more significant event, like someone close to you dying, relationship breakdowns, physical health issues or financial worries. Sometimes it’s not clear what the cause is.

We are all unique, and we therefore cannot compare ourselves to others.  What one person can cope with, another cannot – that’s just being human, we’re all completely different.

Accessing Support

Being mentally healthy and living well is important to every single one of us, whether we are living with a mental illness or not. People access support for a variety of reasons, including preventative! It’s an excellent idea to try and do things that mean our mental health stays positive, rather than reacting to it once it’s already dipped low and needs building up again.

If you, or someone you know is struggling, it’s important to ask for help and support. Talking might not be the solution but it’s always the starting point. For many people, talking to friends, family, or colleagues is a good option. Sometimes though, it can be easier to talk to someone who doesn’t know you. There are a range of completely confidential options available, and we’ve listed some below in case you want to get in touch privately:

Our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), Vivup,  is available for all employees.
