Innovative DLL fitness facilities revolutionise health and wellbeing for school pupils
A hugely successful partnership between DLL (Denbighshire Leisure Ltd) and Prestatyn High School to deliver sector leading fitness facilities has revolutionised the way pupils think about their health and wellbeing.
DLL worked closely with Prestatyn High School and Denbighshire County Council’s Education team on the project to understand the needs of both teachers and students. The aim was to deliver a dynamic and inspiring fitness environment through which pupils could experience a broader and more engaging curriculum. The range of exciting indoor activities was also designed to provide resilience for the school throughout winter months.
In response to a request for a less team oriented approach to fitness, and one which embraced digital experiences, DLL relaunched their Prestatyn Leisure site as a junior fitness hub.
Innovative activities available include a Prama studio, a ‘first in Wales’ digital fitness experience where sound, lights, floors and walls motivate and guide users through a unique training experience, an exciting Clip n’ Climb experience with new climbing and bouldering walls, and IGames, offering a range of activities in an interactive, digital court. February 2026 has seen the launch of a further extension of the facility, with a brand new gym, utilising very latest Technogym kit.
Head of PE at Prestatyn High School, Ceri Evans, said “Since the relaunch of Prestatyn Leisure, we have seen students not just participating in sport, but taking more responsibility for their own wellbeing. Participation levels have significantly increased and students of all abilities and interests can now take part in whatever interests them. Those who may not have enjoyed team games are now thriving in individual fitness challenges. The arrival of these fantastic facilities has dovetailed perfectly with a move away from a traditional approach to PE, and are helping pupils focus on a more holistic approach to health and wellbeing. We had seen falling rates in participation, particularly for girls, but the new gym in particular has helped revitalise this sector.”
Jamie Groves, Managing Director of DLL, said: “Having invested in the health and wellbeing of the next generation, it has been exceptionally rewarding to see the success of Prestatyn Leisure. There has been an inspiring number of pupils joining DLL through our junior membership category, which means they are training after school as well as during school hours. Since September the facilities are also being used on a weekly basis by feeder schools for Prestatyn High, who are loving Clip n Climb and IGames. By motivating our young people to enjoy keeping active, DLL has inspired a culture of wellbeing, resilience and lifelong physical activity that will benefit students far beyond their school years.”
