DLL’s Community Arts team celebrates Social Prescribing Day with success of arts programme.
Denbighshire Leisure Ltd’s (DLL) Community Arts team has been celebrating the success of its arts programme within local communities.
Social prescribing connects people to non-medical support which helps address issues that affect health, but which cannot be treated by doctors or medicine alone, such as loneliness, isolation or stress.
Social Prescribing Day which takes place on Wednesday 19th March is an annual celebration of local community groups and organisations which support people’s health and wellbeing.
DLL successfully obtained a UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund grant to create new creative well-being and intergenerational projects across the county, and the Community Arts team delivered a programme of activities designed to empower people to manage existing health problems and help people connect and grow in confidence. Over 2,000 individuals participated in various music, dance, art and creative sessions between July 2023 and November 2024. Some sessions had a clear objective to use the arts to support people with various health and well-being needs such as dementia, anxiety, stress or depression. Outcomes of individuals who attended longer-term activities showed by 79% felt less isolated. 83% had a positive change in their mental well-being and 79% had an improved self-esteem.

The programme included Lost in Art at Ruthin Craft Centre for people living with dementia, together with concerts and music sessions in the community, care homes and extra care facilities in partnership with William Mathias Music Centre. The team also coordinated intergenerational projects with school pupils and community hospitals and several creative projects supporting people’s mental health and wellbeing with partners such as Kim Inspire, Vale of Clwyd Mind and Canolfan Ni in Corwen. The DLL team ran 38 different art projects, employing 34 freelance artists and contributing more than £50,000 to the local creative economy. An independent report published by Social Value Cymru has demonstrated that every £1 invested delivers more than 5x the amount in social value to individuals who participate in DLL arts projects.
Jamie Groves, DLL MD said ‘Our Community Arts team has worked exceptionally hard delivering their programme within our communities. Social prescribing is an incredibly important element of addressing serious issues affecting health, and our programme can demonstrate the positive effects it has had on people’s health and wellbeing. In addition to these benefits, the programme has also contributed successfully to the local creative economy, something of which we can all be extremely proud.’
